Police want to expand summer cadet program

Codiac RCMP have approached both Dieppe and Riverview to see if they would be interested in hiring Oulton College cadets this summer.

For the past several years the cadets, through a partnership with the Codiac RCMP, have been on patrol in downtown Moncton.

The program has worked so well that the RCMP want to expand it this summer.

Cpl. Patricia Fox told Dieppe city council at its Monday night meeting that in past years the cadets have helped with recovering stolen vehicles, have assisted in arrests, and given directions to tourists, besides being a visible presence in the downtown area.

“In the first year, calls for service (in the downtown core) were reduced by 25 per cent” she says.

Fox presented the same plan to Riverview town council earlier Monday night.

She says they have eight cadets available for Moncton, four for Riverview and four for Dieppe.

Dieppe Mayor Achille Maillet says the city is very interested in the program and will likely be making a decision on whether or not to participate in the next few weeks.
