Oulton Student To Attend “Our Top Talent” Pitch Competition

MONCTON, NB – Oulton College student Alexandra Metallic has been selected as a finalist for the Wallace McCain Institute’s (WMI) “Our Top Talent” pitch competition. The pitch competition, which will be hosted on November 19th in Fredericton, aims to “address students’ perception that there are no opportunities in New Brunswick and showcase to employers that new graduates might not have the 3-5 years work experience but they have talent and potential,” said Jenelle Sobey, Youth Initiatives Manager with WMI.

Metallic, who is studying Business Management at Oulton, is excited to be a finalist in the competition. “My instructor at Oulton introduced this opportunity to me. I would have never thought that opportunities like this existed in our province,” says Metallic. “I think that meeting employers from New Brunswick will influence me to work in the province after graduation.”

According to the WMI website, Our Top Talent is a one-day dragon’s den style pitch competition where students pitch to New Brunswick employers for business cards as oppose to investment capital. Each year, approximately 20 students enter the dragons’ den one by one to deliver a 2-minute pitch to 100 NB based companies.

In addition to Oulton College, finalists in this year’s competition come from the University of New Brunswick, Universté de Moncton, St. Thomas University, Mount Allison University and UNB’s Renaissance College. “We are extremely pleased to have representation at this event and proud that Alexandra has been selected as a finalist,” says Patricia Worthington-LeBlanc, Director of Student Services for Oulton College. “This is a great example of how Oulton students receive both the education and real world experience to help them start their careers.”

When asked what advice she’d give fellow students about opportunities such as Our Top Talent, Metallic said “Just go for it, be yourself! Don’t let anything hold you back!”
