Gerald Proctor ('12)

Dental Hygiene

Gerald grew up learning “hard work will get you through life”. Directly after graduation from high school, Gerald went to work for Pepsi Co. in his hometown of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. During a series of cut backs, after 17 years of hard work for the company, Gerald was forced into making a career change. He took a career development course and discovered he had a strong aptitude for medical sciences. Gerald shadowed a few different medical professions and decided Dental Hygiene was the right choice for himself; “it’s interesting, the pay is there, and it works well for my family”.

The decision to become a Dental Hygienist brought Gerald to Oulton College. The semester before he applied to the competitive program, he travelled back and forth from PEI to Moncton to take the pre-requisite courses at Oulton on weekends. “I applied myself to those courses and I did well, I was very determined”.  After completing the university level Chemistry, Biology, and English courses, Gerald went through the selection process for Dental Hygiene. He scored higher than average on the aptitude test and impressed the instructors in the interview portion, “I was nervous and found it stressful, but my hard work paid off and I was accepted into the program”.

Gerald credits his instructors and fellow classmates for helping him succeed during the intensive two year Dental Hygiene program. “There was a lot of support and we had a great class. The instructors at Oulton have so much experience; they are very compassionate and concerned with each student’s well being as well as their academic achievement. They want to see every student succeed. After I graduated from Oulton College, I felt very prepared to go forward in to the workforce. It was a great opportunity for me and before I was out of my gown on the stage, I had worked lined up, I was ready to go. It was an excellent experience and they prepared me very well”.

Gerald is currently working in Prince Edward Island at Hampton Dental and “loves every minute of it!”

Student Experience

At Oulton College we believe there should be more to College than just studying. Since we feel students should get to have some fun on occasion, we provide events to help enrich their College experience.
