Vickie Lee ('12)

Faculty of Business

When Vickie Lee began studying at Oulton, it was not her first time in the post-secondary environment, she had graduated 15 years earlier with a diploma from another college in the area but had never worked in that field. “The executive secretary course wasn’t the right fit for me; I prefer working with others to doing more administrative tasks, but I didn’t realize that until I was halfway through the course.” After working in various other industries but never truly feeling fulfilled, Vickie decided she wanted to take a college program that better suited her interests and would allow her to work in an industry that was a better fit for her personality.

When she looks back on her first days in the Early Childhood Education/Educational Assistant program at Oulton she recalls, “It was a little overwhelming at first because I had been out of high school for 16 years, I wasn’t used to the routine but I just took it one project and one test at a time and I realized I was really set up to succeed.” This time around, Vickie knew she had chosen the right program for herself, a 60’d and 70’s average student in high school she proudly proclaims “I had a 96 average at Oulton”. Vickie credits her instructors and classmates with providing the extra help and support needed to achieve such great marks. “I got more attention here than I could have ever imagined, my instructors and classmates work as a team. When I graduated I left with a very clear direction for my future. My year long program at Oulton College not only gave me a better understanding of Early Childhood Education, but a better understanding of myself.”

Vickie did her on-the-job training at Unicorn Daycare and is currently working at St. Pat’s family centre in Moncton, where she has ambitions to advance, “I would like to eventually become the director of the daycare, but I know I need experience at the front line first. I’m confident I’ll get there one day, I graduated from Oulton with the tools I need to achieve my goals.” Vickie thought so highly of her experience at Oulton that she recommended the college to her daughter. “As a mother it’s great having the security of knowing she will be studying at a college that will prepare her well for the real world.”

Student Experience

At Oulton College we believe there should be more to College than just studying. Since we feel students should get to have some fun on occasion, we provide events to help enrich their College experience.
